Mr. Monk and the End

Do you have a long-running TV show that you just love? A show where it feels like the cast members have become your extended family? If so, then you’ll know how I feel about Monk. My wife recently binge-watched the whole series and I was happy to accompany her down memory lane. I didn’t catch all of the episodes. After all, I have this blog to write a couple of times per week. However, I did see some memorable highlights that made me smile, and yes, LOL.

My friends and I have a collection of well-loved TV shows that were unfortunately canceled way too soon. Shows like Firefly, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, and Wonderfalls. As much as we loved all of these shows, they were only on the air for a season or two. Adrian Monk and I go way back. Monk was on the USA Network for eight amazing seasons (2002 – 2009). It’s one of the funniest shows, with one of the best casts, I have ever seen. As a result of being around for so long, these cast members started to feel like family.

Adrian Monk is a detective afflicted with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). It’s the kind of disease that makes you drive back and check the garage door, even though you know you closed it. It can be crippling for people who are afflicted with it. The producers of the show were very careful not to make fun of Monk in a cruel way. I remember hearing that many people with OCD were not offended, and loved the show. It allowed them to laugh at themselves. Something we all need more of.

When my wife was watching the two-part finale of Monk (Mr. Monk and the End), I caught bits and pieces. I had recorded both of those episodes to a DVD, but I hadn’t seen them in years. No spoilers, but it ends with a happy Monk. As I saw Randy, Stottlemeyer, Natalie (+ Sharona), and Adrian Monk for the last time, I’ll admit that I had tears in my eyes. It was like saying goodbye to old friends who were moving away. However, it’s nice to know that they’re only a click away. I love you guys.
